There have been significant developments indicating that Valve’s popular handheld console, the Steam Deck’s operating system, the SteamOS, may be used on other portable gaming devices in the near future. The presence of a specific reference for the ASUS ROG Ally in the beta version of SteamOS 3.6.9 reinforces these expectations.
The release notes of the beta version indicate that support will be added for “ROG Ally”. However, it is still uncertain when the operating system will be made available on ASUS ROG Ally.
This update not only sends a signal of opening up to other devices but also includes significant improvements for Steam Deck:
- The refresh rate issue of Steam Deck OLED Limited Edition is being fixed.
- The problem with the incorrect functioning of the frame limiting function is being addressed.
Users can access these updates by joining the Steam Deck Beta or Steam Deck Preview channels.
A reminder that SteamOS is a mobile operating system based on Arch Linux, specifically developed by Valve for Steam Deck. In an interview given to PC Gamer in 2023, Valve had stated that the operating system could be used on other PC-based handheld consoles in the future.
This development indicates that competition in the portable gaming market may increase and users could have more options. However, there is still no definite date for when SteamOS will be fully adapted to other devices.
